OUR MISSION STATEMENT

To Champion access to quality and affordable medicines for people in Southern Africa, by supporting and promoting the sustainable growth of Generic and Biosimilar Medicines.

WHAT ARE GENERIC AND BIOSIMILAR MEDICINES?

Generic and biosimilar medicines provide the same therapeutic benefits as their brand-name counterparts but at a more affordable cost.

Generic Medicines

Generic medicines are safe, effective, and equivalent alternatives to brand-name drugs. They contain the same active ingredients, work in the same way, and meet strict regulatory standards but are available at a more affordable price.

Biosimilar Medicines

Biosimilars are highly similar to biologic medicines but developed after the original biologic’s patent expires. They offer the same therapeutic benefits, particularly for chronic conditions like cancer, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases, while significantly reducing treatment costs.

Both generic and biosimilar medicines play a vital role in making healthcare more affordable and accessible. By choosing generic and biosimilar medicines, patients gain affordable access to essential treatments, provide healthcare providers expanded treatment options, and reduce overall costs to healthcare systems while maintaining high standards of care.

ADDRESSING COMMON CONCERNS

Many patients and healthcare providers have questions about generic and biosimilar medicines. Below are some of the most common concerns and their solutions:

Are generics as effective as brand-name drugs?

Yes. Generic medicines are bioequivalent to their brand-name counterparts, meaning they provide the same therapeutic effect, safety, and quality.

Are biosimilars safe?

Absolutely. Biosimilars undergo rigorous regulatory testing to ensure they meet the same high standards of safety, efficacy, and quality as the original biologic medicines.

Why are generics cheaper?

Generics do not require expensive research and development costs, allowing them to be sold at lower prices while maintaining the same high quality.

How can I ensure I am getting a trusted generic or biosimilar?

Always consult with your doctor or pharmacist and look for regulatory approval from the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA).
